Android TV Certified vs. AOSP Set-Top Box

Introduction

In the rapidly evolving landscape of television entertainment, set-top boxes have become essential devices, delivering a gateway to a world of streaming, gaming, and digital content. Among the variety of options available, Android TV Certified set-top boxes and AOSP (Android Open Source Project) set-top boxes stand out as popular choices. While both share the Android DNA, they exhibit distinct characteristics that cater to different user preferences and needs. This article delves into the key differences between these two types of set-top boxes, shedding light on their unique features and benefits.

Android TV Certified Set-Top Box

An Android TV Certified set-top box is a device that conforms to Google's stringent standards for compatibility, performance, and user experience. These standards ensure that users enjoy a seamless and feature-rich Android TV experience, similar to that of a Smart TV running the Android TV platform. Here are some notable features and advantages of Android TV Certified set-top boxes:

  • Optimized User Interface: Android TV Certified set-top boxes come with a user-friendly interface designed for TV screens. The interface is tailored to be navigated easily using a remote control, offering a fluid experience for accessing apps, content, and settings.
  • Google Play Store: One of the primary advantages of Android TV Certified set-top boxes is access to the Google Play Store. Users can download and install a wide range of TV-optimized applications, including streaming services, games, utility apps, and more, providing a rich ecosystem of content.
  • Voice Search and Assistant: Android TV set-top boxes usually come equipped with a voice remote that allows users to search for content, control playback, and interact with Google Assistant, enhancing convenience and hands-free control.
  • Regular Updates: Google ensures that Android TV Certified devices receive regular updates, including security patches and new features, to maintain a high level of performance and security.
  • Chromecast Built-In: Android TV Certified set-top boxes often include Chromecast functionality, enabling seamless casting of content from compatible devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

AOSP Set-Top Box

AOSP set-top boxes, on the other hand, are built on the Android Open Source Project, offering greater customization and flexibility to manufacturers and developers. While they lack the official Android TV certification, they provide unique benefits:

  • Customizability: Manufacturers can tailor the user interface, features, and functionalities of AOSP set-top boxes to their specific needs and branding. This customization allows for a unique user experience and the incorporation of specialized features.
  • App Installation Flexibility: AOSP set-top boxes are not restricted to the Google Play Store. Manufacturers can choose to offer alternative app stores or allow users to sideload applications, providing more options for content discovery.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: AOSP set-top boxes may offer cost advantages due to reduced licensing fees, making them an attractive option for manufacturers aiming to provide affordable devices without compromising on performance.
  • Community and Third-Party Support: The open-source nature of AOSP encourages community-driven development and third-party modifications, fostering innovation and potentially leading to the creation of unique apps and features.

Conclusion

In the battle between Android TV Certified set-top boxes and AOSP set-top boxes, the choice ultimately depends on Operators preferences and requirements. Android TV Certified devices offer a standardized and polished experience, ideal for Operators seeking an intuitive interface, access to a wide range of apps, and seamless integration with Google services. There are 2 options on moving forward with Android TV Certified devices. One is having a retail version that doesn’t give you any control and your application will be just another app installed on the STB. The other option is to go through the certification with Google that we will gladly help with. After the certification your application will become the launcher and will be the default app when the STB starts. This process is ideal for large operators since there is a cost for this certification.  On the other hand, AOSP set-top boxes provide greater customization potential, allowing us to create tailored experiences, explore alternative app ecosystems, and potentially offer more budget-friendly options. This option is great for operators that don’t plan to order large quantities of set-top boxes.

While engaged in a project, we proactively recommend the optimal solution that aligns seamlessly with the operator's requirements.
